Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee Terminated by Trump:

The committee provided advice and guidance to health officials on infection control practices and strategies for the surveillance, prevention, and control of infections, antimicrobial resistance, and related issues in health care settings. It also advised the CDC on updates to multiple guidelines, including standards on preventing transmission with masks and other isolation precautions.

It was terminated on grounds that that committee is unnecessary because the CDC can implement their own guidelines.

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, whose members include epidemiologists and infection control experts, and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America said in a joint statement that the decision on ending the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee should be reversed.

US Advises Older Adults Not to Receive Chikungunya Vaccine for Now

U.S. officials are recommending that adults aged 60 and up not receive the only available chikungunya vaccine after reports that older individuals who received the shot suffered severe symptoms typically associated with the chikungunya virus. there have been reports of serious adverse events, including neurologic and cardiac events.

Two of the patients died. - Yikes!

The FDA licensed the vaccine in 2023 & the CDC recommended it in 2024 for adults traveling to certain foreign countries.

The vaccine, known as Ixchiq and made by Valneva, contains a live, weakened version of the chikungunya virus and can, in some cases, cause symptoms similar to those caused by the virus, according to the FDA’s label for the shot.

The FDA & the CDC said in a May 9 alert that they are advising a pause in vaccinating adults aged 60 and up.
