Recently, a Chinese national has been indicted in South Korea for conspiring with CCP intelligence to steal classified military information. According to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, the suspect contacted South Korean soldiers multiple times between May 2023 and March 2024, using covert tools like hidden cameras and dead drops to exchange documents and payments.

At least one active-duty soldier was recruited and smuggled a phone onto a base to photograph sensitive materials, including joint U.S.-South Korea exercise plans. Although not charged under espionage laws, which apply only to enemies like North Korea, the suspect faces up to 15 years under the Military Secrets Protection Act due to their foreign status. Authorities vow to pursue the case firmly to protect national security.
