Since 1992 I have been teaching about our American founding in a class called, “The Constitution, as our Founders Understood It.” I have a good grasp of just how far we have strayed from the original ideals. I’ve reminded citizens that the preamble to the Bill of Rights said, "in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added…" These enumerated rights, 26 of them, were not to be infringed by the government. There are no ifs, ands, buts or exceptions written in. The Bill of Rights and our Constitution make no sense without being viewed through the lens of the Declaration. What we are seeing now is the pendulum swing back toward that understanding. I'm grateful for those who add their voices!
