There was a corona viral outbreak in ferrets in the mid 90’s thru the mid 2000’s? It spread from a laboratory breeding farm in NY. They were releasing viral carrier* kits to unsuspecting pet stores. Funding for a vaccine was denied. Thousands of ferrets suffered & died from starvation as their bowel villi liquified. In ferrets, coronal viral infections can manifest as respiratory infections or GI infections. PU tried to isolate it. We were told there would be no vaccines because all affected animals would be dead in ten years. Not true. Infections stopped when the lab stopped sending out carrier* babies. Some suspect this was a dry run for viruses they were considering for the future or studying as a mini pandemic. *carriers are asymptomatic but infected animals.
